Liberated Learning Technologies
Engine Controller / Hosted Transcription Service Bundle:
- represents the latest in speech recognition R&D at IBM. Includes EC engine and "Hosted Transcription Service" front-end + server-side components.
IBM ViaScribe:
- a speech recognition system enabling real-time captioning, editing, and multimedia transcripts. Installs with English (US and UK) language models and vocabularies. Chinese, French, Italian, and Japanese vocabularies available through separate download. Developed by IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.
Caption Editing System:
- a speech recognition system enabling real-time captioning, collaborative editing, and multimedia transcripts. Installs in Japanese or English. Developed by IBM Japan.
Dragon Dictation Text Editor:
- Classroom-friendly text editor for Dragon Naturally Speaking output. Developed by Cambrian College.
Extended Voice Commands:
- additional voice commands that can be installed on ViaScribe 2.11 or higher. Available commands include: navigate PowerPoint slides with user-defined command-words, manipulate the ViaScribe application window (e.g. increase/decrease window size, maximize/minimize application, etc.), toggle mic on and off, switch application windows, etc. Developed by IBM China Software Development Lab.
Multiple Speaker Support:
- two clients supporting multiple speakers are available:
- RealTimeMerge (RTM) "merges the output of multiple instances of ViaScribe on a network to create a transcript of multiple speakers. RTM can also merge the output of multiple instances of RealTimeEdit (RTE), replaying ViaScribe files or editing ViaScribe output in real-time."2 Developed by the University of Southampton.
- MultiSpeaker ViaScribe integrates the output of multiple instances of ViaScribe on a single computer to create an audio-enabled transcript of multiple speakers. USB microphones connected to a hub enable multiple microphone inputs on a computer with only one sound card. Developed by Saint Mary's University.
Note Finder:
- "Note Finder is a note indexing and phrase table system used in conjunction with the Liberated Learning program, but can also be used as a personal search engine. Note Finder makes use of the Paice/Husk stem rules for creating synonym and proximity lists for more effective searching and retrieval. It updates automatically on a scheduled basis."1 Developed by Saint Mary's University.
Personal Display:
- a .Net-based infrastructure that allows ViaScribe 2.11 or higher to send transcription text to one or more clients across a network. Developed by the University of Southampton.
Real-time Transcript Editor:
- an application enabling realtime editing of ViaScribe transcript data over a network. You can also edit in "real time" from pre-recorded files for practice. Developed by the University of Southampton.
VSClient:
- an infrastructure enabling ViaScribe 2.11 or higher to send speech recognized text to one or more clients (Desktop PC or Pocket PC) across a network (similar to Personal Display, above). The client applications were developed for the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, and each contain four "channels" allowing users to choose which of four ViaScribe servers to "listen" to ("Mabel Bell," "Alexander Bell," "Ideas," and "Science"). Clients available in desktop (VSClient.exe) and Pocket PC (VSPocket.exe) format. Server requires Apache Tomcat. Developed by IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.
SR and Accessibility in Virtual Worlds:
- IBM-sponsored project investigating the need for SR in online virtual communities such as Second Life.
Wimba Bridge:
- a bridge allowing ViaScribe speech recognized text to be sent to the closed captioning "channel" of a Wimba online classroom. Developed by SMU and the Neil Squire Society using IBM T. J. Watson Research Center's ViaScribe API.
